From sea to shining seafood: Three amazing seafood destinations.
For seafood lovers, fresh is always best. There’s nothing like a boiled Maine lobster, picked fresh from the traps and served seaside, or cracking open crab legs right there in Alaska. This time, our picks are on the more-southern side of the lower 48, and chances are, one of them is reachable within a day or two of travel in your American Coach. What are you waiting for? Dive in!
New Orleans/Baton Rouge, LA
Right on the Gulf of Mexico, New Orleans is world famous for po’ boy sandwiches, gulf oysters, shrimp, and fish that is often fried and served on sandwiches. Quite the selection here and all of it fresh. Ask for New Orleans style seafood blackened with pepper for an authentic twist. Another great place in Louisiana to travel for seafood is Baton Rouge, famous for their massive crawfish hauls. Attending a southern crawfish boil is a must-do when down here, and crawfish étouffée is a dish similar to gumbo that you simply must try. Set to some zydeco music and every night is a festival!
San Francisco, CA
Looking for a slice of seafood lovers’ heaven? Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco is all that and more. You can sample fresh Dungeness crab in outdoor stands, as well as gourmet restaurants, along with freshly made sourdough bread and some heavenly chocolate. Seafood spots in San Francisco include Alioto’s Restaurant, Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, and Castagnola’s Seafood & Chophouse. Other highly rated seafood restaurants in San Francisco include Don of the Bimini Twist, which offers guests a unique experience with a local chef, as well as Anchor Oyster Bar & Seafood Market and Pacific Catch.
For this trip, you may consider camping in Sonoma and making the day trip to San Francisco by car. That way, you can follow up in the wine country of Napa Valley!
Although the entire state of Florida is one big seafood extravaganza, we narrowed it down to one worthy locale. Hollywood Florida is a great destination for sampling the delicious Peruvian dishes like those at Runa’s Peruvian Cuisine. The nuances of seafood dishes of Spanish culture are quite impressive, using various lesser-known spices that make these seafood dishes irresistible. One of their most popular dishes is the Tiradito Corvina La Brasa made from salsa on seared sesame mahi-mahi fish topped with yellow pepper sauce and sweet potatoes. The juicy flavorful fish is amazing and the freshness exactly the kind Florida is known for. The best part? Most Hollywood dining experiences are reasonably priced so you can indulge to your heart’s delight.
And the fun doesn’t have to end when you leave. With the ample kitchen capabilities and amenities in your American Coach, you may choose to play host yourself and have friends over for your own seafood extravaganza—just the ticket to shake off the cold and look forward to milder weather outdoors. Hit the local markets and bring home a bounty of seafood lovers’ delights to enjoy right at your campsite!
Park Place: Leveling out your coach
Unless you only park in RV parks with perfectly flat and level lots, you know the value of leveling jacks in bringing your coach into proper orientation, both front to back and side to side. We all know the firm stability and residential feel provided by securely jacking and leveling out. So, we’ve compiled a few helpful tips for you to accomplish the leveling process with confidence.
Location, location, location
Aside from perfectly flat, hard parking surfaces, every other place you choose to level will be a combination of hardness, grade and slickness. Obviously, choose parking places that are the hardest, flattest and least prone to slip.
Make sure you’re parking on the minimal grade possible, and that the grade does not exceed the angle specified by the owner’s manual. The steeper the angle, the more stresses on the jacking system and potential for problems. If terrain is unsuitable, find another spot with a lesser grade.
Don’t go too soft
Considering the weight at each corner of your coach, it’s vital that the ground or surface your jacks set down upon is firm enough to not sink in. Having a full set of jacking pads is a must not only to keep you from sinking into softer surfaces like loose gravel, they also protect the jacks from marring onto surfaces like sticky asphalt. You may find on some surfaces, a subsequent re-level is a good idea after your coach settles, but make sure you inspect each corner first.
For specifics, don’t let the hearsay of others jack you around! Find out for sure. Refer to your coach’s owners’ manual. That way your coach will always do its level best.
The Magnificent Mixer: Ruby Red Grapefruit Hot Toddy

This hot cocktail serves the same role as a nice cup of hot tea, but with twist of the primary flavor coming from the citrus, rather than the liquor. 1.5 oz gin
4 oz ruby red grapefruit
.5 oz honey
Garnish: slice of grapefruit
In a small saucepan, heat the grapefruit juice until hot
Pour the heated grapefruit juice into a serving mug, then add gin and honey
Garnish with a grapefruit slice, stir and enjoy!
