One Great Beach in Every Direction
You love a good road trip. You also love a great beach vacation. Why not combine the two and see what beach life is like in every direction. We looked north, south, east, and west and found one beach in each direction that we think will give you an unforgettable beach experience this summer.
Black Beach • Silver Bay, Minnesota
Located on Superior’s north shore, the serene and stunning Black Beach boasts an otherworldly beauty due largely in part to it’s black-hued sand—the result of chemical pollution forever altering the beach’s color. And while the pollution has long since been taken care of, the sand’s strange color remains, making it one of the most spectacular and unique landscapes around. Definitely worth seeing at least once in your lifetime.
Padre Island National Seashore • Corpus Christi, Texas
History buffs and space nuts alike should point their RVs towards Merritt Island, Florida, home to the legendary Kennedy Space Center. You could easily spend a week working your way through all the attractions, from exploring the actual equipment used in missions to learning about the history and even going through some astronaut training yourself! And if you time the trip right, you might be able to catch an actual space shuttle launch while you’re in the area.
Cape May Beaches • Cape May, New Jersey
This 2.5-mile collection of connected beaches are considered to be the best beaches in the state of New Jersey. Consider spending a night or two at one of the legendary Victorian bed and breakfasts in the area, then enjoy all the outdoor activities the beach has to offer, including the daily evening flag ceremony on Sunset Beach. Beach tags—required for beach entry— can be purchased online in advance, but they’re free for active military and veterans.
Coronado Central Beach • Coronado, California
The San Diego-adjacent community of Coronado is home to a number of excellent beaches, and Coronado Central Beach comes with the added scenic bonus of the iconic Hotel del Coronado onsite. This 1.5-mile stretch of literal sparkling sand provides plenty of opportunity for swimming, surfing, and sunbathing, as well as picnic spots, nearby shopping and dining, and proximity to San Diego itself. (Bonus your four-legged family members will enjoy the nearby Coronado Dog Beach!)
